Carbohydrates are always held as the villain at any table where the topic of discussion is obesity, diabetes, and other metabolic disorders. Unfortunately, a part of it is true. Carbs are the true double-edged sword in the nutrition world. Carbohydrates are the primary energy source for the human body, which is broken down to glucose, which further fuels subsequent reactions such as glycolysis and releases ATP, also called the cell’s energy currency. Apart from that, they also have major roles in hormone balance and lipid metabolism. But then, why do carbohydrates have a bad reputation? It is because we are choosing the wrong kind of carbohydrates.
Bad carbs and good carbs can be stark terminologies to describe, but a better way of referring to them is as fast-digesting versus slow-digesting carbs.
